 About Roy Book Binder:

Roy Book Binder is a Blues singing, guitar picking, song writing raconteur, and has been for the past 40 years!  Roy has been interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air, featured on the Emmy award winning segment of the PBS TV series EGG Art in America, and appeared more than 30 times on Ralph Emory’s highly regarded TV series Nashville Now.

Book Binder has been included in THE BIG BOOK OF BLUES, as well as THE BLUES WHO’S WHO!!  Roy has been continually touring across America in his tour bus, which has been his home for the last thirty years, as well as performing internationally.

Back in the early 1960s, Roy learned his craft from the legendary blind street singer Reverend Gary Davis, who was thrust into the national spotlight when Peter, Paul, and Mary recorded his song “If I Had My Way.”  After two years of traveling the folk-blues circuit with his mentor, Roy struck out on his own.  Along the way, he befriended Pink Anderson, an old Carolina medicine show performer (who by the way was the “Pink” in Pink Floyd.  Pink’s stories and songs will forever be kept alive as long as Roy has a stage to perform on

In his travels, Book Binder has run across quite a cast of characters, including three peg-legged dancers, and a 90 year old classic blues singer with a sparkling smile, who was known as, “Diamond Teeth” Mary (Bessie Smith’s half sister).  All of these characters have become a part of a “Roy Book Binder Show” which is a hilarious educational experience not to be missed!  Roy has toured with Bonnie Raitt, Hot Tuna, and J.J. Cale.  He has been invited to many festivals including:  The National StoryTelling Festival, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival, and MerleFest, where he has hosted the acoustic blues stage for the past 14 years. He’s a guaranteed crowd pleaser!!  (http://www.roybookbinder.com/)

 About Frank Fotusky:

Frank Fotusky plays Acoustic Blues in the style reminiscent of the great East Coast “Piedmont” players such as Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Boy Fuller, John Jackson, Blind Willie McTell to name a few.  A majority of his material is culled from the ’20’s, ’30’s and ’40’s and Acoustic Blues and Guitar Rags are the foundation of his music.  Along with this repertoire, his original compositions are rooted in this era and still carry a contemporary feel.  East coast or “Piedmont Blues,” as it is so often called, consists of sophisticated syncopation with fingerpicked guitar.  The result is a sound that resembles that of the ragtime piano.

Frank has performed with Virginia Bluesman John Jackson, Paul Geremia, Roy Book Binder, Hubert Sumlin and has been festival headliner in his own right.  BLUES ACCESS has said, “(Frank) offers a sparkling guitar sound on fine Piedmont-style blues and rags.  Fotusky’s clean fingering draws you in and projects the music, which would be somber in other hands, out.”  In the fall of 1999, Frank released his first CD “TEASIN’ THE FRETS” to widespread critical acclaim. BLUES REVUE stated, “Thirteen heartfelt cuts… played and sung with care and emotion.”  Tom Olson from the Blues Connection said, “Frank understands and plays the music authentically,” and BIG CITY BLUES offered, “This is a player that would be welcomed on any porch, front or back!”  (http://frankfotusky.tripod.com/)

About Thomas Wesley Stern:

From the beginning, Thomas Wesley Stern was an experiment in living for and through songs. On a pan-American road trip, the first tunes were born. In the Brittany Hotel on lower Broadway, others were being made. We started playing in Union Square for coins, now we travel around and entertain wherever we can. Thomas Wesley Stern began as, and remains, four friends who grew up together in Jackson, NJ. Our first EP, “Hope Folk” is available now on iTunes and on CD. (http://www.thomaswesleystern.com/)

About Pokey LaFarge:

Pokey LaFarge was born in the heartland of America and took to the open roads at a young age, earning the key to the freedom by hitching rides and writing boxcar ballads that spun tales of a boy finding his way through this big wide-open country. He submerged himself with the most American of music and embraced himself in the beauty of the land while picking and strumming with down-home groups everywhere he went, falling in with traveling caravans of vaudeville poets and hell-raising bluegrass pickers alike.

In true rambler fashion, LaFarge does not look back; he looks only forward on the next road ready approaching with his guitar in his hand and his voice ready to fly. His influence is deeply rooted in the heroes and misfits of yesterday; the long lost troubadours of country, the kings of swamp-drenched ragtime, and all the legendary bluesmen of the Cotton Kingdom. The result is a boiling pot of American cultures; a wonderfully fresh and quirky kind of pop music that combines delta-meets-Appalachia song-writing with a big, big beat.

Even though the songs were birthed in the hills and country towns of old America, don’t call it old-timey; LaFarge is here to grace it into this modern and electric world. Along with his refreshing take on tradition, Pokey brings his irresistible charm and genuinely romantic outlook on, not only subjects such as the rivers and the land itself, but universal topics such as love, death, and real adventure. With a firm grasp on personal freedom and Shakespearean insight on humanity, Pokey remains one of the very few folks who consistently turn the abstract into a concrete reality.

Music is not just chords and notes and melody. To a person who truly loves music, it is a medium to celebrate this life. For Pokey, every show is a celebration – juke-joint style – where women twirl in their dresses and the fellas stomp their feet and clap their hands. To this day, Mr. LaFarge is still finding tranquility within the yellow highway lines playing up to two-hundred shows a year bringing his music to anyone young and old who is willing to listen.

When: Thursday, April 22nd, 7pm

Where: Brewster’s Bar & Grill, 1217 Main St., Bradley Beach, NJ

About Woody Pines:
Certain talented musicians have the ability to transport the listener to a different time by just hitting some strings or directing the air that fills their lungs. For Woody Pines, you find yourself in the Mississippi Delta when AM radio is king, sippin’ whiskey if you’re fortunate and moonshine if you’re desperate.

The band; comprised of Woody on guitar, banjo, harmonica and lead vocals, Zack Pozebanchuk on  upright bass, Nathan Taylor on drums, and Darin Gentry on fiddle; epitomizes the Dixieland sound and embraces a simpler time.

New Orleans has music seeping out of the bricks in the old French quarter,” said Woody Pines, who moved to New Orleans to study the city’s famous music scene, but now resides in Asheville, North Carolina. “We went down there to learn [the music] not just note for note, but also through the food and lifestyle that make New Orleans so special.”

Although the group has been playing together for two and half years, Pines is the driving force both creatively and on stage, which has lead to some very tall comparisons. “I’m not really sure where the Bob Dylan associations come from,” said Pines. “But I love Dylan and I’m honored to be alive when he is, so I take it as a compliment.”

Pines, who comes from a musical family and has been playing music since he can remember, describes the band’s sound as “one that has been created through time,” and its songs reflect that belief. “Reefer Man” immediately brings to mind a haunting, Halloween hootenanny that could have come straight out of vaudeville. “Pretty Blue Eyes” puts listeners straight into the backseat of a convertible, whipping around the back roads of the Delta on a crisp, autumn night. Several other songs by the band, such as “Nashville” and “Delta Bound,” evoke thoughts of a Southern gossip or a post-Civil War America where the blues weren’t just a style of music, but a way of life. “I pick and choose the best sounding stuff,” said Pines. “Everything from swing band to old country blues goes into our music, along with life’s influences.” by Max Bonem

About Michael Patrick:
Michael Patrick is an established local performer, who recently shared the stage with such country superstars as Randy Travis, Rosanne Cash and Marty Stuart. Along with his success performing as a solo artist, Patrick currently fronts two bands, MICHAEL PATRICK and THE SUBURBAN HILLBILLIES (http://michael-patrick.net) and RING OF FIRE BAND, Johnny Cash Tribute (http://www.ringoffireband.com). Patrick is also a founder of the Suburban Roots Concert Series (http://www.myspace.com/srcsnj, http://www.facebook.com/suburbanroots.concertseries), a concert promotion group whose mission is to support and promote artists in the Americana, Roots, Folk and Country genres in Patrick’s home state of New Jersey.

About Greg Provo:

Steeped in the great traditions of folk, country folk, bluegrass and folk rock styles of music, Provo gentrifies the sound without compromise; “Americana in a word.” Welcome to a journey of moments felt, seen, hoped and dreamed. Lyrics of life framed in musical time. The questions and desires, the successes and failures, the changes and the memories. As we strive to continue our personal journeys. Singing, playing and writing since his teens, Provo has mellowed into a force that will touch you in a way that probes , pesters, saddens, gladdens, inspires and lifts the spirit.

About Joe Whyte:

Combining equal parts folk, rock and Americana, NYC singer/songwriter JOE WHYTE’s songs have been described as “alt-country pearls that shimmer with simplicity and effectiveness” and “beautifully crafted, melancholic Americana.” Whyte’s vocal delivery, storytelling and confessional lyrics convey a sense of urgency not typically seen in today’s music industry.

Chris Knight serious about the rural life (From the 3/26/10 Asbury Park Press)

BY ED CONDRAN • CORRESPONDENT • MARCH 26, 2010

Chris Knight couldn’t have been more serious or deliberate when he tried his hand at songwriting 22 years ago. He kept just a pair of songs after penning a plethora of cuts during a six-year period.

“That’s all that was good enough to keep,” Knight said while calling from his Slaughters, KY., home.

Knight honed his craft for a solid eight years before he cut a bunch of raw songs in 1996. The tunes prefaced his solid 1998 MCA debut. Few of those songs made that album but a number of the tracks resurfaced in 2007 when Knight released “The Trailer Tapes.” The raw moving alt-country songs, which were recorded in Knight’s barn, helped make a name for the underheralded bard.

Knight, scheduled to perform Sunday at Brewster’s Bar & Grill in Bradley Beach, is back with “Trailer 2,” another batch of songs from his early sessions.

This isn’t a collection of leftovers that pale compared to the tracks selected for the original album. It’s another group of gritty, moving songs, inspired by blue-collar, rural life.

“None of the songs are autobiographical,” Knight said. “But none of the songs are complete fiction either.

“The songs are based on something and embellished,” he explained. “It’s like if you’re a songwriter and you end up in jail for a night due to disorderly behavior. Then you write a song about being in the penitentiary for a decade. I just do what songwriters do.”

But Knight wasn’t moved to become a recording artist until he heard Steve Earle during the late ’80s.

“I wrote songs before I heard Steve Earle but those songs aren’t worth mentioning,” Knight said. “But when I heard Steve Earle’s songs, I was for some reason able to write songs that were half-decent. He was inspiring.”

Such exceptional sonic storytellers as John Prine and Bruce Springsteen also had an impact on Knight.

“I have a lot of respect for Bruce Springsteen,” Knight said. “He’s so very good. John Prine was a big influence. Those two are great writers but the spark that hit me from Steve Earle is that attitude he has. It did something to me.”

It helped Knight make vivid, dramatic songs. Expect him to deliver a healthy dose of “Trailer 2” during the show.

“I really enjoyed writing the songs that are on that album,” Knight said. “The big reason I put “Trailer 2′ out was because so many people started bootlegging them. Those songs leaked out. I thought that I may as well get in on the action.”

Knight believes there are enough tracks for a “Trailer 3.”

“I imagine I’ll put that one out sometime soon,” Knight said. “The songs are there but I also would like to put out an album of songs that I’ve recently written. But I’m in no rush.

“I could put out an album tomorrow but I just want to make sure I have the right material for a new album,” he said. “If the songs not right, it won’t make the album. That’s just how it is for another “Trailer’ album or an album with new material. I’ve always been picky about what I put out. That’s something that’ll never change.”

Chris Knight performs Sunday at Brewster’s Bar & Grill in Bradley Beach.

7 p.m. Sunday Brewster’s Bar & Grill (in Bradley Beach Bowl), 1217 Main St., Bradley Beach With George Wirth, Michael Brett and Michael Patrick opening $10 732-774-5515

Welcome Back Chris Knight to New Jersey, March 28th at Brewster’s!

Suburban Roots Concert Series is very pleased to welcome back

Drifter’s Church Records’ Americana Recording & Touring Artist
from Slaughters, Kentucky

CHRIS KNIGHT!

When: Sunday, March 28th, 7pm
Where: Brewster’s Bar & Grill, 1217 Main St., Bradley Beach, NJ

About Chris Knight:

Ten years and five acclaimed albums into one of the most uncompromising careers in American music, the singer/songwriter whose work has been compared to Prine, Cash and Nebraska-era Springsteen by some the toughest music writers in America may have finally conquered his most demanding critic of all: himself.

“Right now, this is my favorite record,” Chris Knight (http://www.chrisknight.net) says of his new album, Heart Of Stone. “It might just be my best. For some reason, there’s a cohesiveness here that’s not like anything I’ve done before. But at the same time, it’s not real predictable. There’s a lot of texture to it as well, but it’s a simple record. I don’t know how that happened. But I know it when I hear it.”

Then again, Knight has always been an artist of fierce instinct and uncommon paradox. A former strip-mine reclamation inspector, Knight still lives in the rural coal town of Slaughters, Kentucky (population 200) where he was born and raised. But it’s been on record – as well as everywhere from rowdy Texas roadhouses to hushed New York City theaters – where Chris has forged the reputation for a stark and often-ferocious honesty that led one writer to call his music “where Cormac McCarthy meets Copperhead Road.”

Patrick is also a founder of the Suburban Roots Concert Series (http://www.myspace.com/srcsnj,http://www.facebook.com/suburbanroots.concertseries), a concert promotion group whose mission is to support and promote artists in the Americana, Roots, Folk and Country genres in Patrick’s home state of New Jersey.

About George Wirth:

George Wirth (http://www.myspace.com/gwirth) is a New Jersey singer-songwriter with a gift for telling stories that are shaped by imagery and narrative. His unaffected, lived-in vocal style and subtle guitar arrangements suit his songs perfectly, with images and melodies that resonate long after the music fades. George has been introduced to audiences and shared performances with friends Rod Picott, Amanda Shires, Abbie Gardner and Red Molly. Other performances have had George co-billed with Chris Knight, Anais Mitchell, Greg Trooper, Luke Brindley and Richard Julian.

About Michael Brett:

Michael Brett (http://www.myspace.com/michaelbrettmusic) was born on the Upper East Side of NYC and raised in the artist-influenced community of Roosevelt, NJ. His first recording, the six-song EP DONE., was released in 1998. Combining rock/pop, folk, alternative with smidgens of jazz and disco, he drew musical ideas from such diverse acts as the Beatles, David Bowie, and Gram Parsons. With his second recording ELECTROPHOBIA, released in 2002, he decided to move in a different, simpler direction. Trading in the electric guitars and toning down the multi-layered vocal overdubs a bit, ELECTROPHOBIA is an accurate representation of the rock-folk style he prefers. Like DONE., the lyrics on ELECTROPHOBIA are part dark, part whimsical, part sarcastic, but completely personal. His third CD, entitled IN THE BASEMENT (WITH ROSIE), released in Fall, 2006, is a great representation of how Michael has fine-tuned and honed his songwriting craft over the last few years.
